I run a painting studio, so I'll admit my bias up front: I want you to buy original art online, because that's where most of it lives now. But I also see what shakes buyer confidence. A flood of AI-generated images and mass prints dressed up as "paintings" has made people rightly suspicious. How can you tell a painting is really hand-painted?
Ask for side-lit photos. Light raking across a canvas at an angle throws shadows off every brushstroke and palette-knife ridge — that raised surface is called impasto, and a flat print simply cannot fake it. If a seller only shows you perfect straight-on renders with suspiciously smooth surfaces, that tells you something.

What should a trustworthy online art store offer?
Here's my honest checklist — the things I'd demand as a buyer, and the things we built our own store around:
- Photo approval before shipping. You should see photos of your actual finished painting and approve it before it leaves the studio. We paint, photograph, and wait for your yes — and because approval happens within 24 hours of finishing, it never delays your order.
- Insured, trackable delivery. Ours is free and takes 4–8 days, fully insured door to door. If a courier damages a canvas, that's the studio's problem to fix, not yours.
