Do Paintings Fade in Sunlight? Reducing Light Damage

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight and moisture, and follow the artist’s care guidance.

At Rosemary Art, every artwork is painted by hand. Here is a practical explanation, without scare tactics.

Why does sunlight fade a painting?

Visible light and ultraviolet radiation can both change painting materials. Sensitivity depends on the particular pigments, binder and support, and on the intensity and duration of exposure. Rosemary Art’s current painted canvases use acrylic on linen. Our standard current works have no clear protective varnish or topcoat. Neither a painting medium nor the presence of a coating makes a work fade-proof; follow advice for the actual materials and condition.

How much sun is too much?

Avoid direct sunlight on the artwork at any time of day. Indirect light is preferable, but prolonged visible-light exposure can still cause change. There is no universal one-hour safe limit; check the wall over the day and reduce intense or prolonged exposure.

How can I reduce light damage?

Consider placement, light intensity, exposure time and handling together:

• Mind the wall. Choose a wall that avoids direct sun, and check it at different times. A wall’s angle to the window alone does not establish a safe exposure.
• Reduce exposure. Curtains and blinds can reduce light exposure. UV-filtering window film may reduce UV, but visible light can still cause change; filtering does not make every window position suitable.
• Light it on purpose. With any lamp, including LED, check intensity, distance, exposure time and heat at the artwork. Avoid a concentrated hot spot or prolonged bright illumination; visible light still matters.
• Limit unnecessary handling. Reduce exposure time instead of moving paintings just to spread light damage. If moving is needed, check the condition and handle the work without touching or pressing the painted surface.

Keep conditions stable and avoid moisture. For routine dust on our stable painted canvases, use only a dry soft brush; no water, cloth or cleaner. For stains, powdering, flaking, cracks or lifting gold leaf, stop self-cleaning or repair, take photos and contact us. Does this mean I should hide my art in a dark room?

Choose a display position that balances visibility with reduced exposure. A white, gold-toned, pink or red appearance alone does not establish lightfastness. Can I hang a painting near a window at all?

Only after checking the actual exposure and condition. Keep direct sun off the work; curtains or UV film do not make every window position safe. Ask for placement advice if the wall receives strong or prolonged light.

Will LED gallery lights damage the art?

They can contribute to light exposure even if their UV output is low. Check the actual lamp, intensity, distance, duration and heat rather than assuming every LED installation is harmless.

My room only gets morning sun — is that safer?

Morning sun is still direct sunlight if it reaches the artwork. Do not judge safety from the time of day alone; check intensity, duration and the actual wall, and avoid direct beams on the painted surface.
