Is It Safe to Buy a Painting Online? What to Check Before You Pay
Yes, buying a painting online is safe — as long as the seller can prove the painting is real, shows you the finished piece before it ships, and backs the sale with insured delivery and a clear return policy. If any of those three are missing, walk away.
Consider the artist’s time, materials, artwork dimensions and framing when comparing prices.
How can you tell a painting is really hand-painted?
Individually applied paint gives the surface its own brushwork, texture and character. — impasto
Better still: ask for process footage. A studio that actually paints has no trouble filming it. Here's one of ours — a charcoal and gold abstract, mid-build:
No renders, no stock footage — this is how every Rosemary Art canvas starts, brush in hand.
And here's what real texture looks like when the light hits it from the side. Notice the ridges casting actual shadows:

A silver-blue textured wave from our studio — every ridge is paint you could run a finger across.
What should a trustworthy online art store offer?
Here's my honest checklist — the things I'd demand as a buyer, and the things we built our own store around:
- Photo approval before shipping. You should see photos of your actual finished painting and approve it before it leaves the studio. We paint, photograph, and wait for your yes — and because approval happens within 24 hours of finishing, it never delays your order.
- Insured, trackable delivery. Ours is free and takes 4–8 days, fully insured door to door. If a courier damages a canvas, that's the studio's problem to fix, not yours.
- A real return window. We give 30 days. Any seller confident in their work will offer something similar in writing.
- A signed original, ready to hang. Every Rosemary Art piece is 100% hand-painted, signed by the artist, and ships with the frame included.
What questions should you ask before you pay?
Three, at minimum. Who pays return shipping if I don't love it? (Get this in writing — on large canvases it matters.) Can I see side-lit photos or process video of this exact piece? And can I change the size or colors? A working studio can answer all three quickly. We offer free size and color customization, so that conversation is one we have every day. Slow, evasive answers are the real red flag — a responsive human on the other end is worth more than any trust badge.

FAQ
Is it safe to use a credit card on an independent art store? Yes, if the checkout is a recognized platform (Shopify, for instance) — your card details never touch the store itself, and card networks offer their own buyer protection.
What if the painting looks different in my room than on screen? Screens vary, which is exactly why photo approval and a 30-day return window exist. Use both.
Are online originals cheaper than gallery ones? Usually, yes. Studios selling direct skip the gallery commission, which often runs 40–50%. You're paying for paint and skill, not floor space.
How do I know the size will work on my wall? Measure, then tape newspaper cut to size on the wall for a day. If the standard sizes don't fit, ask — we resize for free.
