Is It Safe to Buy Original Art Online? What to Check Before You Order

Yes, it's safe to buy original art online — as long as the seller can prove the painting is real, lets you approve photos of the finished piece before it ships, insures the delivery, and gives you a proper return window. If any one of those is missing, walk away.

At Rosemary Art, each painting is created entirely by hand by our artists.

How can I verify the artist’s painting process?

Individually applied paint gives the surface its own brushwork, texture and character.

What protections should the seller offer?

Three things, minimum. First, proof before shipping: we photograph every finished painting and send the photos for your approval before it leaves the studio — nothing ships until you've said yes, and because we hold orders for 24 hours before production starts, that step never delays anything. Second, insured delivery. Ours is free, insured, and takes 4–8 days. Third, a real return policy with a number attached — ours is 30 days, not "contact us and we'll see."

Some buyers also look for provenance — the ownership history of a work. For a new painting bought directly from the studio that made it, provenance is simple: it's us, and the signature on the canvas matches the signature on every other painting we've shipped. For older or resold works it gets more involved; Wikipedia's overview of provenance is a decent primer.

Is paying online actually risky?

Less than people think. Pay by credit card rather than debit — the fraud protection is better — and stick to checkouts with https and a padlock. High-value collectors sometimes use art escrow services that hold funds until the piece arrives and checks out. For a store running on Shopify's checkout, your card details never touch the seller at all.

Why do people hesitate — and should you?

The fear is mostly about not being able to stand in front of the painting first. Fair. But the online art market wouldn't have grown into part of a global wall-art market worth roughly $67 billion in 2025 (heading toward an estimated $119 billion by 2032) if most buyers were getting burned. The sellers who survive are the ones who over-document.

Texture like this gold-lit seascape is exactly what you should ask to see up close before buying.

And there's an upside nobody mentions: buying direct from a studio online usually gets you more painting for the money than a gallery, because there's no 50% commission baked in. It's also why we can offer free size and color customization — you're talking to the people holding the brushes.

FAQ

Is it safe to buy an original painting online? Yes, if the seller shows side-view and close-up photos, offers photo approval before shipping, insures delivery, and has a stated return window (ours: 30 days).

Do I need a certificate of authenticity? It helps, but treat it as one signal. A certificate without seller transparency means little; every Rosemary Art painting is 100% hand-painted, signed, and ships with its frame included.

What if the painting arrives and I don't like it? That's what the 30-day return window is for. Though the photo-approval step exists precisely so this almost never happens.
